AGM Agenda 2008

From Netsoc Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Netsoc will be holding their 2008 AGM on Friday 22nd February at 7pm in the Blue Room of the Student Centre. Anyone interested in the society is encouraged to attend. There will be pizza and a beer reception, and some gaming for those of you with laptops.

This page will be the agenda for the meeting. This is, after all, a Wiki, so anyone with ideas, suggestions or topics to be discussed should add them as an item here, with rationale and explanation as appropriate.

Initial your contributions or something, might make it easier to keep track of what's going on.

Edit: Changed the order of some things, numbered the agenda items.

Edit 2: There is now a page for the meeting's minutes, once they become available. --Paul 13:12, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Contents

[edit] 1. Election of Committee

Big part of the AGM. Feel free to put yourself forward for any position you feel that would benefit the society.

Positions available include:

Auditor Seceratary Treasurer OCM's (Ordinary Committee Members)

We also need Ops members, so if you would like to become involved in running the backbone of Netsoc and learning some skills along the way put yourself forward.

[edit] 2. Treasurer's Report

[edit] 3. Servers Update

What we need running on the current servers and what to do with the now obsolete ones that are sitting around.

Maybe we could set up a few of them running one of those cancer curing programs? Also, we could run a few games servers if anyone wants to get that going. Maybe we could provide mirroring for some open software downloads? Run a super-seeder for Linux distro torrents? Paul 00:40, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 4. Society's Future/Services (to be) Provided

As a Society, moving out from underneath the umbrella of the "Internet Society" to more of a general "Computer Society", what extra services are we going to offer? *nix tutorials, Programming tutorials (interesting stuff like that will spark interest, like making an mp3 server or something.), &c.. So what do people think?

Tutorials would be great, if we have people to give them. Obviously an mp3 server would be amazing, but the issue of legality raises its head, unfortunately. Paul 00:38, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
As for webspace, I think a lot of people would appreciate a http interface for uploading stuff. Not everyone is all that savvy with FTP clients. Does anyone know how hard this would be to implement? Paul 20:22, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 5. LAN Parties

I think we're going to have to figure out a strategy for future LAN parties. I think it would be a good idea to cater to both the casual and the serious gamer. For the casual fan, we could put together a package of fun, free, cross-platform games. People can come along, we play half an hour of each game, have some friendly banter, listen to some music, and no one takes it too seriously. For the hardcore brigade, maybe we should get a CS tournament or something going, where people can earnestly spend three hours fragging with earphones and rapt concentration. I'd be more interested in organising the casual end of things, my knowledge of high-spec modern games is rather slim. -Paul 16:42, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 6. Hoodies

Should NetSoc have a hoody for this year's committee and/or members? I think it would be cool to have a nice-looking society hoody you wouldn't actually be ashamed to wear (there's too many bright yellow hoody eyesores on campus, replete with some unfunny catch phrase in massive Comic Sans lettering) We need a slick looking hoody. Anyone have any ideas? Here would also be the place to have protracted arguments over whether it should be a zippy hoody or a pull-over. I vote zippy. -Paul 16:48, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 7. Talks

[edit] 8. Social Events

Netsoc is a society, after all. Does anyone want to organise some sort of outing? Maybe karting, or paint-balling? A night out somewhere? Post ideas here! -Paul 16:54, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
